Topic: Analyse the role that story and myth play in Aboriginal culture. Story and myth provide the Aboriginal people with the spiritual beliefs. Aborigines believe that the Ancestral Beings, who were from earth, created all the things by calling out their names. They travelled from territory to territory while creating. As a result, different groups of people are linked together. When the landscape was created accompanied with lives, the Ancestral Beings set up a framework, within which all the lives that would live in that region can exist. This framework gives instructions in Aboriginal peoples’ lives.(O’ Shaughnessy, P 2010) These instructions tell people how to behave, what punishment they would receive if they broke the law.( Green, N 2010) The stories are passed on not by written down, but through song, dance and picture, and were delivered to the elders of the community. The stories were passed on from generation to generation in that way. Children learned the stories by hearing them again and again. When listening, they learned how to survive in the world, how to respect the Ancestral Beings and how to react with other related groups. Even now, some Aborigines, who live in the urban area surrounded by modern western culture, still have a consciousness that they are Aboriginal. The reason for this phenomenon is that all the Aboriginal people have the connection with land. “The land is core of people’s lifestyle, social systems and identity.” (Western Australian Museum 2010) Land gives people food and shelter. The stories of Ancestral Beings made this significance rooting in their mind. As a consequence, the story and myth act as core of the Aboriginal culture, which give Aborigines spiritual beliefs.
