每個國家其實都有自己的教學優勢,也有自己的教育優勢,但是到底哪些因素會影響留學生的抉擇呢?很顯然,課程設置、留學時間長短、學費等問題都是重要因素。本文以實例來闡明

INT: Welcome, I would like if you could share with me the reasons underling your decision to do masters in England.
A: I complete my graduation in 2007 I applied for postgraduate masters study at that time but due to some problems I could not proceed, because of my tran-scripts. I could not choose an MBA because I would have needed some work experience so I focused on masters in marketing because I was very keen toachieve a glamorous position in a global organisation. I read a few articles before coming here, I learnt that the marketing scenario in India and in European countries is completely different and I was very curious to get to knowmore about it, this urged me to study abroad to experience this directly. So I looked for countries like US, UK or any International country, for US youneed 4 years of study so I turned it down because I only had 3 years, in Australia I did not want to go so I ended up choosing UK even though itis the most expensive one because this was my dream and I really wanted to accomplish it.

INT: Was it already in your plans to look for a job in UK afterthe accomplishment of your masters ?
A: For masters my reason was also for exposure, one year is too short forexposure. In one year I only get to know about marketing theory and the stu-dent environment, my main reason was to get to know the European market,I still have no idea about the European market, I know about Internationalstudents how people think how the thinking creates. It was already in mymind to stop here and work for a couple of years, then I will go back.

INT: So you started to look on the Internet for your search onUS and UK universities?
A: Yes my search was first on the Internet and then trough the consultant. InIndia lot of students, maybe 95% of students go by consultancy, only peoplewho have brothers or sisters who are already studying abroad and they guidethem or have a very good knowledge of the Internet.

INT: did you contact the British council also?
A: yes, I looked at the web site and attended some meetings.

INT: How did you selected the universities?Which university wherein your last pool of choice?
A: How I started my research, first I searched on Internet, I looked at theGuardian site, which has a very good ranking, I checked about the Guardianranking than I checked about the eligibility criteria and I selected 10 univer-sities, out of 10 I was eligible in 7. http://livesitehelp.com/lxnews/<标题> I applied in all 7 but my first prioritieswere Strathclyde in Scotland, then Southampton, Nottingham. For Warwick, which was my first choice, I applied but I was rejected because of my ILTSscore, in London I did not applied because it is too expensive, Leeds andWinchester, Manchester even though I was not very keen about it overall Igot 5 offers. I choose Southampton because it is a old uni, the other unies were 20 years 30 years Southampton I think is 50 years old, that made mea good impression plus ranking was very good last year management schoolwas 6 and 11-12 at uni level, not in the top ten as I wished but very close.Another thing was that one of my uncle lived in Southampton for some timeand he told me it was a nice city, I also checked on the Internet it is a smallcity. I did not want everything in one go, I wanted a slow impact, it was agood starting point to experience UK, It is very international, I did not wantto go in a uni with lots on Indians.

INT: Concerning the student population, were you a little sur-prised about the composition of the students at the school of man-agement, did you expect so many Chinese students?
A: I was not surprised I was a bit disappointed I did not want too many Indi-ans but not even all Chines, it was too much, I wanted it to be more balanced, there are a lot of different problems with Chines people.

INT: Concerning the decision of studying abroad did your familysupport you what role, if any at all, did they play in your decision?
<标题> A: Initially my dad was a bit against it, it is very expensive compared toIndian standards in India the fees in the best University are 1/3, I spent 11thousand pounds here, It will be about 4 to 5 thousand pounds in India andthen my living expenses are different, it totally cost me 25 thousand poundsin India anybody can start its business with this, then my dad said ok youreally want to do it just select out the unies find out good ones and come tome with conclusions, tell me this uni this much fees and then will think aboutit.

INT: Did your family play any active role in selecting the uni-versity?
<标题> A: I selected everything, I had 4 unis which I wanted, these are the fees thebalance is this and I would like to take an education loan, then i will payback after some time. Then he discussed at his own level with his friendsand other family members like my uncle and then he decided and told me hetrusted me and he was going to support me.

INT: What about your arrival in UK and the Welcome Week?
<标题> A: I will seriously tell you, the Welcome Week events I was not at all happythey were not good. I am a master student, they have not treated mastersas masters students and many other students from MSc Management, MscAccounting told told me they felt the same. I want my individual respect, youare MSc Marketing, here all management students were grouped together. There is no class identity, when the course starts they have to introduce theclass members, I am a not very shy person but for the all 1st semester I didnot know who were in my class mates, we did not have any meet and greetwith drinks kind of thing. Welcome program is at large level people feel toshy and overwhelmed, it was more focused on technical information, it wasjust a meet not a greet.

INT: Ok, Concerning the campus facilities the sport center thestudent union activities, how was your impression?
A: With the student facilities if you talk about the gym the SSC they are quitehelpful its good if you have a problem they solve it on the spot. The studentunion is not bad, though in the starting they will organise a lot of things thereare lot of different societies Indian society, Asian society but their work isnot very good they have society but the society work is not very attractiveinformation from the union is good but the work on behalf of the society isnot very good, maybe because we are here only for one year. I enrolled for theIndian society, the British one the Christian society it is called which organ-ises the International Coffee I really enjoyed their concept, they organised forme an invitation for a traditional lunch to a British family, it was a reallygood experience.

INT: What happened with the Indian society what is it that youdidn’t like?
A: They are not very good in organising, they charge you for everything andthe whole thing is run by undergrads and when you talk to undergraduatesyou are postgrad the gap comes in, even if its only one or two years they con-sider you different. Students come for exposure to get to know other peopleat their own level, you need to organised something for masters students ifour school organise something in our batch it would be better and more peoplewould come we get to know each other. Concerning academic work we shouldalso have more group study because we get to know each other, each otherskills. If the presentation, which I think was the most successful group work, had taken place in October it would have been better every one presented eachother and we all improved our confidence level, when you give the individualthe chance to speak in front of everybody they get more confidence and learnnot to be nervous.

INT: Concerning the course were you happy with the course sub-jects?
A: It was fine, but I think it was not a good match the first semester we got toknow the basics of marketing in the second semester stress went up then youare free for two months they told us to reed but it is a normal psychologicalthing if you give something students will do otherwise they will not read, itwas not balanced.

<标题> INT: Concerning your overall experience would you recommendSouthampton University ? What is your position ?ises the International Coffee I really enjoyed their concept, they organised forme an invitation for a traditional lunch to a British family, it was a reallygood experience.
